Why is Halloween such a beloved holiday by all? Is it the candy, the pumpkins, the costumes, the thrill, or just a chance to have a party? Whatever it is, Halloween continues to be a holiday that gets people of all ages excited. In Atlanta alone there’s tons of events that are centered around the holiday: haunted houses, parties, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches to name a few. With costumes being such a hot commodity, the challenge to stay fresh (Will’s word) and trendy gets tougher and tougher, as the same ole costumes become less and less original. Fear not, be-puzzled reader…for ideas, you’ve come to the right spot. Will Mill The Intern and I have locked ourselves in a room with Starbucks galore and have come up with a pretty good list of popular costumes for 2009. Get sucked in and see if your opinion matches ours…if it doesn’t, let us know, back it up with something better and post it below for all of the fun-loving halloweenies who read this article. Let’s get started…
In Memory Of: Michael Jackson, according to research by a major costume company, searches for this halloween costume has risen 1000% over last year; Farrah Fawcett;
On the Big Screen: The Joker from Dark Night; Harry Potter from Harry Potter; Any of the vampires from Twilight;
Oldies but Goodies: a Brady; a Fembot ; a Bunny; Zack Morris
Famous Couples: The Obamas; John & Kate Gosselin; Heidi & Spencer
Aside from these trendy/current costumes, another “in” trend this season: costumes on a budget. No joke…we’re not just saying this because we’re trying to promote financial frugality. Honest. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2009 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, total Halloween spending is estimated to fall 18% this year. The survey also found that the average consumer plans to spend around $20.75 on their costumes in ’09.
So how do you do it? How do you find a killer costume on a budget? For starters, instead of buying packaged costumes, try piecing together looks with accessories and clothes from your very own closet. Last year, my roommate and I were the infamous Thelma and Louise. After dropping off a donation at Goodwill, we picked up a couple pairs of Levis, visited our nearest vintage store and scored a couple of black motorcycle tees, dropped in at the Dollar Store for some props, and headed to our Halloween party (after applying the blue eye shadow and curled hair, of course). I think we spent around $12 a piece on our costumes.
Ok, so those are the fruits of our labor. Not many fruits, but we’re hoping with your help this list will grow. We want to hear if you agree, disagree, have your own creative costume idea, know a great way to save on a costume or – dare I say it- we wanna hear even if you loathe the holiday.
Get posting peeps. Let’s make this a good one.
